This player works great. The up-scaling is good but we really bought it for the sound quality which is awesome!

5 Stars Discontinued and hard to find
This player for the price is top notch. Unfortunately, they discontinued this model, and everyone ran out of them rapidly as word got out how good this player was. I tried to purchase 2 more for my boys about 6 months after buying my first one. Everyone is sold out.

3 Stars Pretty decent - a bit “underwhelmed” though
I got the Oppo DV-980H expecting truly stellar DVD upscaling performance and while the image quality was better than the sub-$100 DVD players it wasn’t as good as another DVD player in its price range - the Pioneer Elite DV-49AV. The Pioneer has a noticeably sharper picture (not by a lot, but noticeable none the less). Plus the Pio has better audio quality. I don’t have a home theater set up, and on standard TV speakers or my headphones the DV-49AV just sounds richer (the Oppo strikes me as a little too much on the Treble side - thin and irritating). Plus the Oppo hung three times in quick succession for up to 10 seconds on a disc that the Pioneer played without issue. Being able to track scratched Netflix DVDs is pretty important to me. Another odd thing, while physically smaller, the Pioneer had a good bit more “heft” to it. The Oppo felt a bit more cheaply constructed for its size.

Its a good player - definitely better than the lower tier models, but the Pioneer beats it for the same price (and the Oppo is going back).

3 Stars LOST OPPO - TUNITY
Bought the DV-981H direct from OPPO after reading about it on the net, i needed a multi region player and thought i’d give the oppo a chance it arrived well packaged the cloth bag hinted at quality but alas it was not to be, it played well for just 3 days before crashing. It is i suspect a software problem the reaction time between button pressing and actual remote response is a problem another example, if you want to avoid the trailers on the disc and go straight to the main event it seems to throw the DV-981 into a tizz, it freezes and displays a no disc sign and i could not, no matter what oppo staff suggested restart it, the machine recognised neither CDs, nor DVDs, For a machine which costs (220 Pounds including shipping) its not good enough bearing in mind this is the Faroudja chip version which one would expect means QUALITY. I contacted oppo and they arranged collection of the player i am now awaiting a replacement. All i have to do with my old SONY player is to eject the DVD if it displays no disc and reinsert the DVD it simply resets itself and plays, OK its only a region 2 player but its still working after five years and it cost less. I didn’t use the included HDMI lead which i must admit OPPO did well to include but the few days i could use the player with the Scart output into my Lowe AVENTOS TV it looked great. Watched the TRANSFORMERS REGION 2& HIGH NOON REGION 1 so saw both colour, and B&W, as well as multi region mode operation and i played some CD tracks. Viewing & Sound was nice and rich but with a Lowe via JAMO 2.1 it always is,i suspect that if the OPPO’S build quality was better, the two would compliment each other nicely. Audio was very good too JAH CURE’S TRUE REFLECTIONS was bright the bass was round and heavy and his voice sat up in the mix MARIA CAREY’S NEW CD/ RYAN LESLIE/GEORGE MICHAEL/CHOPIN/LITZ/LEONA LEWIS also fared well the OPPO gave a Balanced, and highly listenable sound the DV-981H is not an audiophile player but its fine for general audio purposes. For music i use a CAMBRIDGE AUDIO 640cv2 CD Player. The DV-981H performed well thru my JAMO i300B 2.1 system Just a damn shame about its build quality it needs better software, a machine of its sort should be more durable for real world needs i know that this is a common problem with these machines i hope that OPPO will iron out all these lergies. I was contemplating upgrading my TV to try their new BLU RAY machine which they say plays everything albeit via HDMI only, but i will wait until they replace my DVH-981 if its any more reliable then and only then will i give it a try, hopefully a player costing that much will be reasonably bug free but then that’s what i thought about the DV-981H which has both Scart and HDMI the best of both worlds i thought so far.. er….no. Will update this article when i receive a replacement.
